What's With the Rocks?

If you’ve ever visited our office, you may have noticed several rocks inscribed with the Kotman ‘K’ on people’s desks.

No, these aren’t corporate paperweights or an effort to bring some nature into our digital world. The Kotman rocks are just one of the many quirks that make our workplace culture a pillar of who we are as an organization.

In 2019 we started our Internal Team Review (ITR) Program. This program was derived from a similar process we have with clients. A couple times a year, we schedule meetings with our clients called Technology Business Reviews (TBR), where we sit down with them and ask how they’re doing, what’s working, what’s not, where we’re headed, etc.

This process contributes to our Mission of, ‘Our team helping your team to succeed together’. But, we realized that in order to fully live our mission, we needed to direct some attention internally, as well. The Internal Team Review (ITR) Program was born.

The ITR focuses on our values, roles, and ‘rocks’. It’s a time to reflect on who we are and how we’re living out our values. Our roles focus on where we’re winning and our place in the grand scheme of things. Our rocks are the continuous cycle of improvement.

Every 90 days, each member of our team selects 1-3 specific goals that guide their professional development. We call these goals our rocks. When these goals are met, the team member receives a literal rock marking their accomplishment and success from that quarter.

You’ll see these rocks proudly displayed throughout our office. There’s a sense of pride that comes with the rock. They are a visual reminder of the continuous improvement we expect of ourselves, and our innate ability to accomplish the goals we set.
